Chapter One: Trinity
His hand ran down her neck and in a split second he had opened the vein and was quickly drawing blood out of her open wound. Someone else may find the image of their boyfriend sucking another girl’s blood upsetting, but it was all part of the job.
“That’s enough. Bring her forward.” I said as I stood in front of the High Council. “What is her charge?”
“She was found draining humans.” Damien said to me as he saluted and bowed.
“Again?” One of the Council members asked in disbelief.
“That is it Carmine. This is your fifth offense in a year. This cannot be allowed. You will be burned.” I turned to see the other High Council members nodding in agreement.
Only one, from my own protection, showed any form of resistance in his stone cold face. He was my right-hand man and Carmine happened to be his intended. Mike’s eyes slowly glazed over as he heard my command.
In a millisecond I was in front of Mike, my eyes staring into his. “What else would you have me do with her Michael? She is a threat to our existence.”
“Burn her Most High.” Mike said commandingly. He knew what was at stake and that the lives of the entire vampire race could not rest on a single connection. There would be others. For him there always were.
I nodded to the guards that lined the exit to the courtyard of my courtroom. They took a steel chain and wrapped it around Carmine’s neck and arms and led her out to where her sentence would be fulfilled. I turned to the room of Elders and High Council and spoke.
“Friends, we are living in a time were humans are much more advanced than we had predicted. We cannot risk any possible detection. Let Carmine serve as an example to you. If I hear word of a drainer, that vampire will be burned, as well as their sheriff and their head of state. If they are a multiple offender, the High Councilmen of their area will also be burned. You have been warned. Go now. Go back to your home vampires and let tonight serve its purpose. I will see you all here at the next full moon.”
Damien followed me out as I left the courtroom a few paces behind me, but enough to let me know he was still there. My secretary walked up to me as I started to head to my office.
“Trinity, Jonathan is here for you.” I could hear Damien pause behind me before I answered.
“Tell him to wait for me in the foyer.” I responded as I headed for my bedroom.
I changed out of my court clothing- a black dress with a deep purple cloak and into a pair of black jeans and white tank top. The only jewelry that remained on my body was a silver chain with a 3 carat red ruby that sat directly on the dip in my collarbone. When I exited my room and began the descent from my stairs to the foyer, I saw Damien across the landing.
“Damien. Go attend to the burning.” I knew he was going to be angry with me later, but I needed to deal with Jonathan on my own.
Jonathan kneeled before me as I walked down the steps to him. “Greetings Sheriff Suojelu.” I spoke as he began to rise.
“Trinity.” Jonathan breathed my name as he stood before me.
“What is it that you want?” I asked calmly.
“It’s been 900 years doll, why do you think I’m here?” His hand moved to my cheek.
I stepped back before I spoke again, “Jonathan. I am not the same vampire I was 900 years ago. I am in charge of the entire vampire race. I have clawed my way out of ever war, quarrel and fight vampires have had over the last century. You spent one hundred years by my side, and you left because it became too much for you. When you promised me the world Jonathan, I believed you. This,” I waved my arm around the castle and all its ground, “is my life. I am the Most High. Damien has stood by me and protected me when you were too cowardly.” I knew my aura was glowing red.
“You have always been more powerful than even you realized Trinity, but we were meant for each other, we were MADE for each other.” Jonathan tried to convince me.
“No. Do not try that with me now Jonathan. I do not care what the Elders of the century before believed they were doing. You cannot handle me and you cannot handle what I am.”
“But I love you!”
“Bull shit Jonathan. You loved who you thought I was. I am more powerful you are right, and Damien is THERE for me. I may have loved you once, but you’re not practical for me.”
“Screw practicality.”
“Screw you Jonathan. Mike will show you to your room, you are free to remain here as a diplomat, nothing more. I would appreciate it if you would leave me be for a while and present to me the reports of your area tomorrow evening. I do not permit feeding on campus, but there are several blood refrigderators in the castle, Mike will tell you where they are.” I turned on my Gucci patent leather heels and walked back up the stairs. With my back to the landing I spoke to Damien, “I know you have been there the entire time Damien. Leave me.”
