Never Tell

The twilight began to fade to charcoal skies

As he set out along the road

Each step became harder for him as he neared the end

The symbolic ending of time

This wasn’t just a street corner,

This wasn’t just a road

This was the only place left uncovered

Before he slipped away

Sometimes they say that the end of time

If just a figment of our minds

But in the soles of his shoes he could feel this was right

This was the only place

This was where he took his last breath

This is where he must have cried

This wasn’t just a walk-along

This was a good-bye

His gray eyes swept over the ground

Taking in knowledge of it all

His mind made up

He turned on his heels to go

This wasn’t the way things were supposed to go

This wasn’t the way things were going to be

This was the one thing

That never should have been

He walked back to where he started

Climbing up the stairs

His hand shook violently as he initialed the papyrus

Written in blood

White candles flame lit in remembrance

From the pocket of the coat

Came the black candle

Lit with red flame

His legs carry him to that place

The one place he found

Perfect to sort it all out

Stepped onto the pavement

His oil of the veins lay spattered across the page

Red blazed to maroon

As the fire consumed

His last wish

The floating orbs of white

Never seeing him

All black

The collision sends him flying

The two words written

In all that oil

His soul would never let it go

So simply

People gather to mourn the death

Thinking it was by chance

The only one who knew

Wrote her own in red

The words to end his story

Taking mine along

Those two simple words

Never Tell

Saying it’s just a tragedy

Doesn’t let him go

He got to escape

And now I’m all alone.
